Finding rest
September 30, 2007 – 10:40 pmCome to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
These verses have been a balm for my soul so many times that I have lost count. I am a business woman, wife, mother, friend and daughter. There are many times throughout the week that I am just tired and quite frankly, weary. So much so, that I have committed these verses to memory so that even if I am not near my bible, I can recall them at a moment’s notice.
Jesus was so amazing in that he met people at the point of their need. He fulfilled a longing that was deep inside.
For the leper in Matthew 8:3, Jesus healed the leper as requested, but he did it by touch. The leper knew that Jesus could heal when he spoke in Matthew 8:2 saying “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” The leper didn’t say that Jesus must touch him or be near, he only said if Jesus was willing. Yet, Jesus reached out and touched him. Healing and touch were both needed. I can only imagine that the leper had not had anyone reach out and touch him in a very long time as he would have been avoided by all.
In Matthew 14:13-21, Jesus is teaching to a great of number of people. It says in verse 14 that He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. At the end of the day, Jesus was compelled to feed this group of people. He did it with a small amount of loaves and fishes. He had taught them, healed them, and then he fed them.
So when Jesus tells us to come to him when we are weary and burdened as in Matthew 11: 28-30; I believe Him. He gives me rest for my soul and peace in my heart. I am especially grateful on those long and tiring days for this gift.
Thank you Jesus for Your gift of salvation and Your presence in my life. Lord, I ask You to give me rest for my soul. I ask You to humble me so that I may learn from You. I ask this in Your name. Amen.
In His Service,
Kari Norman
